It began as a grassroots\r\nresponse to rape and violence against women in Argentina in early 1970's.\r\nDuring that time in Argentina, women were being raped, murdered, and\r\ndisappearing in alarming numbers. In, response local feminist organizers\r\nbegin organizing \"Thursday's in Black\" to raise awareness about the\r\nviolence that women faced, and to put pressure on governmental officials\r\nto do more to stop the violence.\r\n\r\nSince those beginnings, Thursday's in Black has been taken up by\r\ncommunities in Bosnia, Israel, the Sudan, New Zealand and throughout\r\nEurope. It has more recently begun happening in the United States, mostly\r\non college campuses. Indiana University students initiated the campaign\r\non this campus for the first time in April 2004.\r\n\r\nThursday's in Black is always locally organized. There is no\r\ninternational, national, or even state-wide effort to create or build on\r\nThursday's in Black. In this way local communities create their own\r\nThursday's in Black in a way that makes the most sense for them and which\r\naddresses the specific issues faced by their own community.\r\n\r\nAt IU, RAISE (Raising Awareness of Interactions in Sexual Encounters) is\r\nthe student organization at the forefront of sexual assault awareness and\r\nprevention initiatives on campus. In addition to training volunteers as\r\npeer presenters for the \"He Said, She Said\" interactive workshop, RAISE\r\nalso has a men's program called \"No Excuse\" and looks for campus education\r\nand organizing opportunities around these issues. We believe that the\r\nsolution to rape and violence against women lies within the culture of\r\ncampus and the performance of masculinity.\r\n\r\nRAISE works in partnership with Middleway House (the local women's shelter\r\nand rape crisis line) and other community-based groups. Domestic Violence\r\nAwareness Month (October) and Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April) are\r\ntwo key campaigns within this community-wide education and organizing\r\neffort. Thursday's in Black is but one of the efforts that we organize\r\nduring April.\r\n\r\nRAISE and Middleway House invite you to participate in Thursday's in Black\r\nin ways that make the most sense for you. We have developed this\r\norganizing packet to assist you in raising awareness about the issues, but\r\nthere are plenty of other things you can do. You can also contact us to\r\nfind out about the other events and programs happening during April or\r\nOctober. You can invite one of our peer educators to come speak to your\r\ngroup, club, floor, house or class about the issues and\/or about how you\r\ncan be part of the solution. You can become a volunteer in RAISE\r\nyourself. You can organize a vigil in your neighborhood in honor of the\r\nvictims of sexual assault or domestic violence. You can organize an\r\nongoing discussion group about the issues and explore how your community\r\nis affected (RAISE volunteers can also assist you in organizing this\r\neffort or providing speakers or facilitators).\r\n\r\nSexual Assault and domestic violence has an impact on all parts of our\r\ncampus and community and every person can be part of the solution. Demand\r\nan end to Rape and Violence!!! Thank-you for taking a part and we look\r\nforward to working with you.\r\n\r\nFor More information, Contact:\r\nRAISE\r\nOffice of Women's Affairs\r\nMemorial Hall East\r\nRAISE@indiana.edu<\/a><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Thursday’s in Black is an international event.
