\nresident of Holmdel, New Jersey, Sokolow is, as of 2006, a sophomore
\nat University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her debut
\nalbum, Something About Violins, was released in November, 2006, on the
\nWestern Vinyl label. Often drawing comparisons to Cat Power and Mirah,
\nSokolow has gained acclaim for her decidedly lo-fi sound; the entirety
\nof Something About Violins was recorded using the built-in microphone
\nof her PowerBook G4. Her music, which predominantly consists simply of
\nher vocals and acoustic guitar, has been noted for its subtletly and
\nintrospectiveness. Sokolow has also been heralded not just for the
\nintimacy of her music, but for her awareness of her own fragile
\nemotional state. All of the work on Something About Violins, including
\nmixing, instrumentation, and album packaging art, was done by Sokolow

\nOhio, Blake Miller creates songs that range from the haunting to the
\nintimate, but contain an honesty that allows him to stay far enough
\noutside the lyrical styling of the “freak folk” movement to create
\nsomething truly distinct. He exhibits vocal melodies suggestive
\nperhaps of Devendra Barnhart or Grizzly Bear, coupled with the
\nintimacy and earnestness of early Iron & Wine recordings. (courtesy of

\nlo-fi, while neglecting the booze and stoned kind of inspirations, not
\nknowing what to do with the casual artists that need depressions to
\nhelp the underground feeling stand up clearly. But also Justin often
\nends up musically surviving on mattresses, surrounded by small paper
