{"id":1256,"date":"2007-12-04T15:10:41","date_gmt":"2007-12-04T20:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.terrorware.com\/geoff\/2007\/12\/04\/captivity-narratives\/"},"modified":"2007-12-04T15:10:41","modified_gmt":"2007-12-04T20:10:41","slug":"captivity-narratives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.terrorware.com\/geoff\/2007\/12\/04\/captivity-narratives\/","title":{"rendered":"captivity narratives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chiara is just finishing taking a class about captivity narratives and I&#8217;ve been reading a few things at the periphery of that.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s created this reality tunnel about stories about captivity and stories that expose the basic human dynamics that cause people to value different groups of people differently.<\/p>\n<p>I made this post to aggregate a few things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last week&#8217;s This American Life, <a href=\"http:\/\/thislife.org\/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=344\">The Competition<\/a>, had a story about a Tulsa factory owner who imported workers from India and had them living and working in terrible conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Yesterday&#8217;s NYT had an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/12\/03\/nyregion\/03slavery.html?ex=1354424400&amp;en=a0e32ed4e31cf27e&amp;ei=5124&amp;partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">article<\/a> on slavery on Long Island and the abuse of foreign domestic workers throughout the US.<\/li>\n<li>The book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Womens-Captivity-Narratives-Penguin-Classics\/dp\/0140436715\">Women&#8217;s Indian Captivity Narratives<\/a> has a narrative by Sarah Wakefield entitled <em>Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees<\/em> that has an uncharacteristically critical perspective (and uncharacteristically outspoken for a woman writer at the time) on white&#8217;s perceptions of Native Americans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chiara is just finishing taking a class about captivity narratives and I&#8217;ve been reading a few things at the periphery of that.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s created this reality tunnel about stories about captivity and stories that expose the basic human dynamics that cause people to value different groups of people differently.
