Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice\r\nactivist, unjustly arrested and charged in federal\r\ncourt on 16 counts of arson, property destruction, and\r\nconspiracy, relating to two incidents that occurred in\r\nOregon in 2001. Daniel has plead \"not guilty\" and\r\ndenies any knowledge or involvement in the crimes he\r\nis being charged with. He is facing a minimum of 30\r\nyears in prison and the possibility of life in prison\r\nif convicted.\r\n\r\nDaniel is from New York, and has been an active member\r\nof the community, working on diverse projects such as\r\nthe demonstrations against the Republican National\r\nConvention, Really Really Free Markets, and supporting\r\npolitical prisoners such as Jeff \"Free\" Luers and\r\nothers. Daniel was attending graduate school for\r\nacupuncture and was working at Women's Law, a\r\nnonprofit group that helps women in domestic abuse\r\nsituations navigate the legal system, which is where\r\nhe was arrested by federal marshals on December 7th,\r\n2005.\r\n\r\nDaniel was indicted separately, but his arrest comes\r\nin the context of a well-coordinated, multi-state\r\nsweep of six activists by the federal government,\r\nwhich has charged the individuals with practically every\r\nearth and animal liberation case left unsolved. The\r\narrests were made primarily from information\r\ninvestigators received from activist-turned-informant,\r\nJacob \"Sketcher D\" Ferguson. Jacob is cooperating with\r\nfederal investigators and wore wiretapping devices\r\nwhile speaking with several of the defendants,\r\nincluding Daniel. Since then, one of those arrested,\r\nStanislas Meyerhoff, has also decided to cooperate\r\nwith the prosecution, hoping that the court will show\r\n\"mercy.\" Daniel has stated that there will never be\r\nany cooperation on his part with his \"captors.\"\r\n\r\nIn order to help Daniel, his family and friends have\r\ncreated a support network (Family and Friends of\r\nDaniel McGowan) in order to help fund Daniel's legal\r\nrepresentation which is expected to be hundreds of\r\nthousands of dollars.
