My name is Geoff Hing and I am coordinating a project at this summer’s
\nAllied Media Conference in Detroit, MI, July 16-19. For more
\ninformation about the conference in general, please see
\nhttp:\/\/alliedmediaconference.org\/. I’ve been aware of your project for
\nsome time and am excited to finally get a chance to talk to all of you
\nand hopefully collaborate this summer. I’m hoping that you can help
\nprovide expertise in-person (really important), consulting advice
\n(important), or hardware donations (less important, but helpful) with a
\nspecial project at this year’s conference.<\/p>\n
I am seeking your help with a project in this year’s Media Lab space at
\nthe conference. The conference organizers describe the Media Lab space
\nas “an open, collaborative space where people can go to make media
\ntogether, after being inspired by the things they learn in conference
\nworkshops. Youth are the main teachers and learners in this space,
\nleading workshops in animation, beat-making and recording.” An example
\nof a media lab project from last year was the building of an FM
\ntransmitter by conference participants, with the guidance of folks from
\nthe Prometheus Radio Project, to be used by a grassroots organization in
\nDetroit after the conference.<\/p>\n
This year, one of the projects will be to refurbish computer hardware
\nand install Free\/Libre\/Opensource (FLOSS) software to make
\n“supercomputers” that will form a permanent media lab in Detroit. This
\ncomputer lab will be a training space to offer participants insight on
\nhow to make full use of common and new technologies. Participants from
\nthroughout the city will use the lab to learn skills for web 2.0
\norganizing strategies, media production, community radio, interactive
\ncommunication techniques, technology design, and media policy.<\/p>\n
Since a big part of the project will be working with conference
\nparticipants to refurbish PC hardware and install FLOSS software, your
\nproject immediately came to mind. I would love it if folks from your
\nproject could do some of the following:<\/p>\n
* Come to the conference and act as mentors for the supercomputing project<\/p>\n
You will share your expertise with conference participants as they piece
\ntogether usable machines from donated hardware and then install a
\nGNU\/Linux operating system and multimedia software. As the machines get
\nbuilt, you will show folks how to use them for things like
\nvideoconferencing, beat making, image editing, graphic design, or
\naudio\/video editing.<\/p>\n
* Be available to for consultation<\/p>\n
Maybe you can’t make it to the conference, but you have tons of
\nexperience in sharing tech skills with people. I want to know what
\nyou’ve found are the best ways to show people how to do this stuff. How
\ndo you break down the process into steps\/tasks? What language or
\nanalogies do you use to make things clearer? How do you document the
\nprocess so other folks can replicate your work? If you have ideas to
\nshare about these kinds of things, please let me know your contact
\ninformation so we can chat.<\/p>\n
* Donate hardware<\/p>\n
We’re looking for machines with these minimum hardware requirements:<\/p>\n
1 GHz CPU
\n256 MB RAM
\n10 GB Hard Drive
\nSound and Video Cards
\nNetwork Card<\/p>\n
The media lab is looking to build 5 machines, so the emphasis is
\ndefinitely on quality rather than quantity. However, if you would be
\nwilling to donate one barebones machine, or one large-capacity hard
\ndrive, or one really great video or sound card, that would be so helpful.<\/p>\n
* Suggest a session for the conference’s How To track<\/p>\n
If you have other skills you want to share outside of this project
\nthrough a session, or there’s just something that you feel has been
\nmissing at other media conferences, suggest a session at
