{"id":2639,"date":"2014-01-12T18:45:28","date_gmt":"2014-01-12T23:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.terrorware.com\/geoff\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2017-10-20T21:18:58","modified_gmt":"2017-10-21T02:18:58","slug":"colonial-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.terrorware.com\/geoff\/2014\/01\/12\/colonial-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Colonial Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the holidays, I visited my family and played a board game called <a href=\"http:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/boardgame\/119506\/freedom-the-underground-railroad\">Freedom: The Underground Railroad<\/a>, that simulated\u00a0 abolitionists helping enslaved people to escape to Canada from plantations in the South.\u00a0 I have mixed feelings about the game.\u00a0 I liked that it was a collaborative game, and in many ways provided a richer, more nuanced context for the abolitionism and the underground railroad than what I learned in grade school.\u00a0 At the same time, with players playing as abolitionists, the game felt like it reinforced a savior mentality and tended to minimize the agency of enslaved people and push the horror of slavery and the experience of the enslaved to the background in the game&#8217;s historical narrative.\u00a0 Still, it felt refreshing to play a historical game that wasn&#8217;t centered around war, resource exploitation, or colonialism.<\/p>\n<p>When I first started playing contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getgamesgo.com\/best-strategy-board-games\">strategy board games for adults<\/a>, I was struck by how many games had an uncritical colonial narrative.\u00a0 On a recent trip to LA, I went to an exhibit titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/research\/exhibitions_events\/exhibitions\/connecting_seas\/index.html\">Connecting Seas<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\">Getty<\/a> and some of the media in the exhibition made me think that there might be a historical precedence for such colonial games.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a board game from the early 1900s, used to promote Germany&#8217;s colonial exploits, that was featured in the exhibit.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t able to find an image of the game&#8217;s cover, but it featured an illustration of a German soldier or sailor surrounded by racist architectures of Africans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2644\" style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.terrorware.com\/geoff\/files\/2014\/01\/german_colonial_game.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2644\" alt=\"German Colonial Game, ca. 1910s, mixed media including chromolithograph.
