Good Luck, The Hot New Mexicans, The Bradleys @ WIUX Stationhouse. 8p. free.

Good Luck is from Bloomington, a fairly new band whose members all come from a variety of other musical projects.  They play nice, melodic power-pop that reminds me a little of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.  The Hot New Mexicans are from Athens, GA and play punk music, but some songs are more down-tempo, nostalgic, and boozy.

GROUND UPS
HERCULANEUM
BASILICA

HERCULANEUM is comprised of members of Chicago's Icy Demons, Head of Femur, and Cursive. Their seven-piece jazz band takes you through the most unimaginably cool licks, groovy lopsided rhythms, and sincere confessionals, all the while executing it with authentic jazz character.

Dig on this rap, cats: http://www.herculaneumsound.com/images/timeout_web.jpg

BASILICA is Bloomington's carefully-guarded destabilizing force. They share their engaging vision of our surreal world through spectacular arcs of violin melodies, serpentine guitar harmonies, jet-propelled rhythms, and dazzling video projections. www.myspace.com/basilicaproject

GROUND UPS are a glorious train wreck of eclectic influences. Their impressions of jazz, twelve-tone, Balinese, and musique concrete are performed with raging expression, creating a dark scribble of noise-rock/ trash-jazz drums, saxophone, trumpet, and vocals. www.fmsmprc.com

Artist Statement and Bio

As an artist Herb Rieth has explored many different media and conceptual territories. His works range from discrete and succinct mixed media wall pieces to traditional oil painting in addition to open ended installations that incorporate viewer interaction and play.

One of his main areas of focus is the use of cloth as a signifier as well as a formal element within his work. This has taken the form of pillows used by the audience to construct their own meanings as well as in a two dimensional format to seat images in time and to contextualize them in terms of social class and function.

Recent topics of exploration have included the use of cartoon imagery as filtered through the Chicago Imagist movement, exploring disjuncture through quilted cloth and use of camouflage as a form of landscape.

He has exhibited nationally in the United States in juried competitions (winning top honors in the 2006 Northern National Juried Exhibition), invitational exhibitions (recently at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN) and various national and regional group shows.

Mr. Rieth has also begun to lecture on his work extensively, at various venues from Community Colleges to large state Universities.

As a long time resident of Bloomington, Herb played in various local bands including The Doo Dads, The Squash Blossom String Pullers Orchestra and The Ballroom Roustabouts.

Currently living in Starkville, Mississippi, Herb teaches Drawing and Design at Mississippi State University after stints teaching at Ohio Northern University and University of Cincinnati.

Men Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Discussion @ MCPL Auditorium. 7-9p.

On behalf of Nu Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., I
would like to invite you to participate in our “Men Against Sexual Assault
and Domestic Violence.”  This program will be held at the Monroe County
Public Library’s Auditorium on Thursday November 15, 2007 from 7pm-9pm.
The program will be divided into three sections. First, a representative
from the Middle Way House of Bloomington Indiana will speak about sexual
assault/domestic violence.  Then, we will facilitate a dialogue on the
issues surrounding sexual assault/domestic violence. Last, there will be a
resource fair providing information about preventing sexual
assault/domestic violence and ways to support victims of sexual
assault/domestic violence.

Please join us for this important conversation!
