jaime’s printer problems in windows xp

my friend jaime has had her computer ravaged by virii. i used mccaffee to clean up as best i could but in the aftermath, her printer stopped working. it seems the cause is that the print spooler service won’t start. below is an e-mail that i sent jaime to help her with the problem.

Ok, so I did some research into problems with corrupted windows system
files…

Here are some things to try to get your printer running. I’d suggest
reading through all the information first before starting. If you feel
uncomfortable doing this, please feel free to call and I can walk you
through it on the phone, or I can come over and try these things myself.
Again, my # is 812.336.4412.

It turns out that on Windows XP, there is a utility to automatically check
whether system files have been corrupt and install new ones. The first
thing that I would do is to run this and see if it automatically fixes the
corrupted files and your printing problem. If you would like to learn more
about how this works and what it does, you can read a good article that I

1. Go to the “Start” menu (you know, that little green box at the lower left
hand corner of the screen)
2. Click “Run”
3. A little window titled “Run” should pop up with box labled “Open” where
you can type in a command.
4. Type sfc /scannow in that box and click “OK”
5. Let it run and keep track of any error messages that occur. E-mail me,
call me if it doesn’t run smoothly.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Go to start->Control Panel->Printers and Faxes
8. See if your printer shows up.
a. If it does, try printing something.
b. If it doesn’t, try clicking on the “Add a printer” icon and see if
it pops up the “Add Printer Wizard” window, or if an error message occurs.

If this doesn’t fix your problem, we can try one more thing …

First, you need to change your setting so you can see hidden system files
(since those are the types of files that we’ll be working with):

1. Click on Start->My Computer
2. This should bring up the My Computer window
3. Click on the Tools->Folder Options menu item at the top of the window.
This should bring up the Folder Options window.
4. Click on the View tab.
5. In the list below, select the “Show hidden files and folders” option by
clicking on the little dot next to the option. Also uncheck the box next to
“Hide protected operating system files”
6. Click the “Apply to all folders” button.
7. Click the “OK” button. This should close the “Folder Options” window.

Now we need to see if you have a backup copy of the print spooler program
already on your computer. There didn’t seem to be one when I checked last
night, but now that I know where it ought to be, we might as well check.

1. In the “My Computer” window that should still be open, type
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
into the “Address” text box at the top of the window. Alternately, you can
browse to this location by clicking on the folder icons in the “My Computer”
window.
2. In the “My Computer” window you should now see a list of files and
folders in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder. Scroll down and look
for the file
spoolsv.exe
3.
a. If it exists, we want to copy the file by clicking on it ONLY ONCE.
This should make the icon look somewhat grey. Then, in the menu at the top
of the window choose Edit->Copy to Folder. This will bring up a window. In
that window, browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and then click the “Copy”
button. Choose to overwrite existing files if you’re prompted about that.
b. If it doesn’t exist, download a copy of the spoolsv.exe file from
http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/xghingx (click on the “Public” folder and the file should be there)
and save it to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ . Choose to overwrite existing files if you’re prompted about that.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Go to start->Control Panel->Printers and Faxes
6. See if your printer shows up.
a. If it does, try printing something.
b. If it doesn’t, try clicking on the “Add a printer” icon and see if
it pops up the “Add Printer Wizard” window, or if an error message occurs.

after spoonboy borrowed my alarm clock, i got to using the neat alarm clock plugin for xmms on my linux box to wake me up. but lately, i’ve been using my windows box a lot which has itunes. i found references to a couple applescripts to provide alarm clock functionality for mac itunes. with the recent release of itunes 4.5 for windows and a com interface, i decided to write something similar in python for windows.
