abortive bike adventure

written 09.07.2002

[after a 15 mile bike ride to the northernmost border of franklin county in search of a swimming spot

me: are you sure that there’s a designated swimming area here?

brian: yeah, it’s just past that bridge.

me: have you been here before?

brian: yeah.

[we ride past the bridge. there’s no swiming area, just a bunch of duck crap and a fairly picturesque resevoir with the occasional boat slicing through the water.]

me: are you sure that you didn’t go to alum creek before?

brian: umm, yeah maybe

me: … over by polaris? …

brian: oh yeah!

[we decide to swim anyway. on the way back home, will gets an irreperable flat and we have to get jimmy to come rescure us (this requires not only the prospect of cake donuts, but also an olive branch or two in the ongoing won gai versus number one holy war.]

after the ride we hung out on the porch, talked with travelers and grill peppers and dumpstered portabello mushrooms. when i got home late, i ran into erin dean who had just flown in from redmond. that was cool. should make the house more exciting.

2 good stories that i heard today

written 09.07.2002

story 1:

when my friend was in high school, he went to a nirvana concert. the opening band was lame, so he and his friends decided to go to a nearby mall to hang out. at the mall, he ran into kris novaselic, dave grohl, and the cellist that they had on that tour. my friend then ran around the mall shooting the members of nirvana with toy guns from kb toys.

story 2:

boy who is estranged from his parents asks to come see them. they hang out, and things are pretty good. then he asks if he can go to the dentist. since he hasn’t gone in a few years, it’s pretty painful. so, he hooks up with some old friends and drowns his pain with booze. he does some drugs and passes out. his friend thinks he’s just really drunk so he is left overnight in the car. the next morning, the friend realizes that he can’t wake his friend up, so he rushes him to the hospital where it is discovered that this kid is in a coma. tests show that the kid has a heartbeat but no brain activity. this continues for a few weeks, but there is no progress. hours away from his parents pulling the life support plug, the boy regains consciousness. he says that he saw heaven, and it was filled with hot women and harleys. he says that he didn’t care if he lived or died because heaven seemed to so cool. the weirdest part is that this story also includes a weird brush with celebrity. the parents of the boy run into charlie sheen who is at the hospital because his brother has cancer. he takes interest in the boys struggle and comforts the parents relating his experiences with drugs and tragedy. after the boy recovers and is released, sheen still stays in touch.

Alexi says,

Maybe I’m the only one who hasn’t already heard of it, but in case not,
check out http://www.tightvnc.com for a new version of that fine, though
now apparently discontinued, product. From what I’ve seen so far, it’s
a *lot* faster and has some new features (easier SSH tunneling or something)
to boot.

the next best thing to the real thing

ok, so we couldn’t sneak into the slayer/in flames show at the newport. and ok, so we couldn’t exactly afford the $36.00 tickets. we could, however, play these awesome slayer midi files. totally awesome.

reinstalling windows

one of the better guides i’ve seen to reinstalling windows 9x, it discusses most of the tricks that i use and a few new ones that seem like a good idea:
