Rising Tide Roadshow @ Boxcar Books. 7:30p. free.

Rising Tide Roadshow:
confronting the root causes of climate change!

Tuesday, April 17 @ 7:30 PM
Boxcar Books (3rd and Washington)
Free!

From their tour summary (see www.risingtidenorthamerica.org for more information):

This spring, Rising Tide will bring the global struggle for climate justice to the belly of the beast, connecting the dots between the overarching crisis of climate change and the grassroots struggles of communities resisting the fossil fuel industry’s assault on their land and culture. Through partnering with local environmental and climate justice organizations in each region, we seek to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate change and the fossil fuel industry, boosting support for these revolutions on the local level and creating a culture of solidarity across lines of race, class and gender.

Two mutually-beneficial strategies that we will explore on the roadshow are: sparking and supporting local struggles against fossil fuel infrastructure, and building real, sustainable alternatives that foster community and decrease our dependence on the industries and institutions destroying the planet.  The Spring Roadshow will take a popular education approach to organizing and agitating for climate justice, employing music, participatory games and multi-media to foment life-affirming resistance.

“‘No!’ is a film that is about more than sensational exposure. ‘No!’ seeks
resolution to a painful crime that has been shrouded in silence for too
long in the Black community.”
Dwight Williams, Executive Producer
Hustle & Flow, and Baby Boy

“Given the level of violence against women in this country, we owe it to
ourselves and to future generations not to turn our backs on this film.
For in ignoring this film we would once again be ignoring the voices of
women.”
Kevin Powell, Activist and Author,

disaster show 2006.04.09

We played at Uncle Festers’ Punrk Rock Night which is like some kind of right of passage for Bloomignton Punk bands, getting out of the comfort of the basement and getting into the murky warmth of the bar.  This would have made me pretty uncomfortable a few years ago, but I kind of appreciate the novelty.   Boogdish played and talked fast and crazy and I dare say I was engaged by it.  Basillica played and to me they sound like Dillinger Escape Plan with violins.  I think it’s pretty good, but unrellenting.  They had this guy who organized the videacy series last year do some projections and they were triggered by a midi unit with triggers connected to the drummer’s kick pedal and snare.  A punk band with lots of metal influences called chapstick played.  After they played I overheard them talking about the migration of people from the city of Detroit to the suburbs, but still claiming Detroit as being part of their identity.  There’s that map again. Crazy.  Punk rock night shows go so late, and neither Rawny or Kevey wanted to play last.  It was between either us or Os to play last, and Benny had to work at 8a, so we decided to just set up together and trade off songs which made things move faster, was really fun, and made for a nice end to a somewhat strange show.  I projected this video that I took while on Defiance, Ohio tour while we played:

Rawny and I also made patches with help from Mike.  The text is from the poem Toward Strength by Kimiko Hahn and the floral print is from the embossing on the cover of an old book I found in Sparky’s basement

cartography

So I’m still pretty transfixed on the population growth map from the New York Times that I wrote about a while ago.  I came across these two maps that were pretty damn intriguing.  One is of prison proliferation over the last century, and one is about privatized prisons and immigration enforcement.  It’s amazing all the things beyond geography that can be represneted with maps:

I ended up using one of the maps in a flyer for Pages’ upcoming Pack-A-Thon event:
